Community Profile: Southeastern San DiegoThe Southeastern San Diego Community lies south of Highway 94, west of Interstate 805, east of Interstate 5, and shares a border with National City. Southeastern San Diego includes the neighborhoods of Sherman Heights, Logan Heights, Grant Hill, Memorial, Stockton, Mount Hope, Mountain View, Southcrest, and Shelltown. Southeastern San Diego is a large urbanized and ethnically diverse community located adjacent to downtown San Diego. The original Southeast San Diego Community Plan was adopted by the San Diego City Council in 1969, and became the basis of the City's "Model Cities Program." In 1987 the community plan was updated and adopted by the Council. One of the features of this community plan is the identification of the various neighborhoods within the planning area. This includes a move toward establishing neighborhood identity which is linked to each neighborhood's culture and history through the involvement of citizens and the establishment of revitalization teams. More information Logan Heights is a neighborhood in central San Diego, California. In 1871, Congressman John A. Logan wrote legislation to provide federal land grants and subsidies for a transcontinental railroad ending in San Diego. A street laid in 1881 was named Logan Heights after him, and the name came to be applied to the general area. Plans for a railroad never successfully materialized, and the area was predominantly residential by the turn of the century, becoming one of San Diego's oldest communities. Its transformation began in 1910 with the influx of refugees of the Mexican Revolution, who soon became the majority ethnic group. For this reason, residents and non-residents alike now call the southern part of the neighborhood Barrio Logan, though officially it remains part of Logan Heights. Barrio Logan is known to historians, art connoisseurs, and Chicanos as the home of Chicano Park, the site of a land takeover and cultural renaissance.
