Campo is an unincorporated town located in San Diego County,
California. There is a county road maintenance station on
Forrest Gate Road and a county fire station at Jeb Stewart Road
and Parker Road. Large employers in the area include US
Department of Homeland Security Border Patrol and the California
Division of Juvenile Justice, Campo Juvenile Ranch, (population
250). Campo is near the official southern terminus of the
Pacific Crest Trail, a recreational hiking and equestrian trail
extending 2,650 miles (4,260 km) north to the Canadian Border.
During World War II, Campo was the location of Camp Lockett, a
US Army post that hosted Buffalo Soldiers, a veterans
convalescent hospital, and POWs. An unnamed air strip measures
about 0.6 miles (966 m) in length and runs almost due
north-south at the intersection of Lake Morena Rd. and Hauser
Creek Rd. Nearby towns include Boulevard, Potrero, Tecate,
Dulzura, Jacumba, Pine Valley, Mount Laguna, Descanso, and
Jamul. Lake Morena County Park2550 Lake Morena Drive Campo, CA 91906 Map - Park Map - Campground Morena Reservoir lies in the middle of 3,250 acres of chaparral, oak woods, and grassland. In addition to these natural attributes, the newly renovated park features some of the most modern camping facilities in San Diego County. Picnicking, hiking, fishing...Lake Morena County Park has something to offer every outdoor enthusiast. The lake is the highest (3000 feet) and most remote of the city's reservoirs. Because of its location southwest of the Laguna Mountains, the park shows characteristics of desert, coastal, and mountain habitats. This chaparral woodland is home to a variety of animals. Bald eagles, mountain lions, rattlesnakes, and many migratory waterfowl can be observed in the remote wilderness. The campground consists of 86 individual sites, 58 of which have water and electrical hookups and are comfortably situated in a grove of majestic oaks. Lake Morena has a youth camping site, a primitive camping area on the North Shore, and wilderness cabins. (Note: the North Shore Primitive Campground is closed until further notice because of the lake’s low water level.) Even if you're not camping, though, you can drop in for a picnic lunch and short hike. Trout fishing is excellent in winter, and bass start biting in spring (the lake record for bass is a 19 lb. 3 oz. largemouth, and the record trout weighed 9 lb. 6 oz.). Spring and summer are also good for panfish. Bring your own boat or rent one of ours. Hikers will want to explore the Pacific Crest Trail, which passes through the park on its way to Canada. Only minutes away from Lake Morena County Park is Campo, where you can discover local history in the Campo Stone Store or take an exciting train ride through the rugged backcountry.
